Adding Containers

Use the + button in the upper right hand corner of the screen to add a new container. You will be prompted to give the container a name, and enter in its weight when empty. If you would like, you can take a photo of the container, or add an existing photo to help you remember which container it is. You can also mark a container as a Favorite. Tarrific can show you just your favorite containers, so they are eaiser to find once you have added a large number of containers.

You can show your list of containers either vertically or horizontally. The vertical list shows more containers at a time, while the horizontal list shows a larger version of each container's image. Switch between views using the icons in the upper left corner of the main screen. For either view, you can choose how the containers are sorted. They can be sorted by the date they were added (the default), by name, by weight, or by favorites. You can also choose to only show containers that are marked as favorites by using the Filter button in the lower right corner of the main screen.

Once you have created a container, you can edit it or delete it. If you are in the horizontal, or icon, view, you tap the "Edit Container" button at the bottom of the screen to change the name, weight, or photo of a container. When you are editing a container, you can also delete it. If you are in the vertical view, swipe to the left on any container to bring up buttons allowing you to edit or delete the container.

Weighing Containers

Tap on any container to bring up the weighing screen. Once you have a container holding ingredients, weight it on your scale, and enter that weight into the top line on the screen. Tarrific will subtract the empty weight of the container, leaving you with the weight of the contents. You can change the weight at any time.

Portions

Tarrific can help you divide the contents of any container into equal portions. Tap the "Show Portions" button to bring up the portions calculator at the bottom of the screen. You can specify how many portions the contents should be divided into. The resulting portion size is shown. Below that is the weight that should show on the scale as each portion is removed. Removing enough ingredients from your container to match each weight displayed will ensure that you create equal portions.

You can also specify a portion size. Tarrific will show you how many portions you can get for the given size, along with how much would be leftover in the case where the contents can't be evenly divided into the specified portion size.

Settings

You can change the default units being used to enter in weights in Tarrific. Tarrific supports either the metric system (grams) or the imperial system (pounds and ounces). You can decide whether or not you would like the option to switch between unit systems whenever you enter a weight. If you want the option, leave the "Show switch to change units" turned on. If you only ever use one unit system, you can turn off the switch to simplify the app.

Each unit system also has an associated precision. The default precision for grams is 1 gram. The default precision for ounces is tenths of ounces. The precision you specifiy depends on your scale. You can determine the precision by checking the owners' manual, in the unlikely event that you still have it around! Otherwise, you can start weighing something small, like grains of rice, and note the smallest weight registered, or note how the weight increases.
